Spend the Night in a Pipe

Spend the Night in a Pipe

It’s almost like being homeless

All the charm and safety of a bomb shelter

Our rooms are no longer full of crap

We like to imagine that those were among the tag lines rejected by the Dasparkhotel, the accommodations in a suburb of Linz, Austria where guests spend the night in a recycled drainage pipe.

Spend the Night in a Pipe
The Dasparkhotel consists of three large cross-sections of sewage pipe that have been turned into rooms. Each room-pipe is outfitted with a double bed, reading light, wireless internet connection, a safe for valuables and, oh yeah, a hole so occupants can still breathe when the door is closed.

As you’ve likely gathered from this description, and from the below photos, the “hotel” in the Dasparkhotel name is a bit of a misnomer—these accommodations are not meant to be a substitute for a “real” hotel room but fall more under the category of glorified camping (like the California coast yurts we reviewed).

The “park” part of the name, however, is accurate. The Dasparkhotel is set on a grassy field on the banks of the Danube River in the town of Ottensheim. It’s a popular picnic spot. There are public restrooms on the grounds, used by both overnight day park visitors, that are constructed from . . . you guessed it . . . large recycled drainage pipes (set on their ends rather than their sides). It is all maintained by the parks department that cleans the Dasparkhotel rooms and changes the sheets between visits.

Though the thought of staying in a concrete bunker—and the threat of hoodlums rolling away your hotel room in the middle of the night—may not appeal to you, it is impossible to complain about the Dasparkhotel room rate: a donation to the park of any amount you wish.
