This January the Carnival Liberty will set sail on a special Fangs and Fur Cruise. But if you imagine this is an opportunity for you and your four-legged companion to take to the high seas—a sort of Rover + You + the Love Boat—you are off. Way off.

The fangs in question belong to a vampire. The fur belongs to a werewolf. And the cruise’s target audience is literally literary—it is for aspiring authors of the gothic genre.

And, really, what better way for would-be authors to get literary inspiration than to head to the Caribbean in close quarters with lovers of vampires and werewolves . . . and with no escape between ports?

The star attraction of the Fangs and Fur cruise is screenwriter Judy Burns whose work includes major motion pictures (including Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan) and TV episodes for such hits as Star Trek and Magnum P.I.. Burns is in high demand as a teacher—several of her students have gone on to successful creative careers and have The Mothman Prophecies and episodes of NYPD Blue among their collective writing credits. So the chance to spend a week with Burns and play shuffleboard on the Lido deck is quite something.

The Fangs and Fur cruise comes with many opportunities to get serious “work” done. On the schedule are seminars on such topics as Anne Rice and the Transformation of the Supernaturals from Horror to Romantic Figures and The Use of Vampires and Werewolves in the Harry Potter Series. The cruise also includes writer workshops and interactive activities designed to bleed your creativity dry.

But you know what they say: All work and no play makes Dracula a dull vampire. And so the cruise itinerary is sprinkled with a healthy dose of fun. There will be a screening of Twilight (with Burns providing live commentary), a Fangs & Fur Costume Party and a trivia showdown between werewolves and shapeshifters (the smart money in Vegas is on the shapeshifters). And, oh, by the way, there are also port stops in Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios (Jamaica).

The Fangs and Fur Cruise departs from Miami and runs from January 2nd through 9th, 2010. Fortunately for the safety of those attending, the January full moon isn’t until the 30th.

How fun! A cruise with a twist 🙂 I guess it makes sense with the sci-fi craze right now.
