Summer Camp—For Adults

Youth, they say, is wasted on the young. And maybe summer camp is too. Twelve-year-olds can’t fully appreciate the joys of carefree days playing volleyball and failing at archery, taking afternoon swim breaks and roasting marshmallows by a fire, raiding rival cabins and sneaking out after curfew for stolen kisses behind the equipment shed.
For those who miss the summer camp of their youth—or missed out on the experience all together—start packing your duffel bags. Club Getaway, a New England resort, and Jetsetter, a flash-deal website with travel bargains, have teamed up on create a summer camp experience; one that’s for adults only.

Club Getaway
Club Getaway, located on 350 green acres in the hills of northern Connecticut, USA, is an adults-only all-inclusive resort. Or, rather, it’s a mostly-inclusive resort—wine is provided with dinner but otherwise you bring your own alcohol or avail yourself of the cash bar.
Do not imagine “all-inclusive” in the mold of, say, a Sandals experience. Sandals resorts are fantastic (we’re big fans) for a luxurious, pampered hotel vacation. Club Getaway truly feels like a summer camp. Instead of an Olympic-sized swimming pool it has a lake. Instead of gourmet restaurants it has a dining hall that serves mildly-delicious, though mostly uninspired, food. Instead of well-appointed rooms with high thread count sheets it has semi-rustic cabins each accommodating one to four adults.
It is all comfortable enough. And what it lacks in luxury it more than makes up in fun. Club Getaway offers activities galore, some scheduled (participation is always optional) and some spontaneous. There are summer camp staples, like tennis, basketball and canoeing. Plus there’s lots of stuff your summer camp didn’t offer, perhaps for liability reasons. Think wine tasting, beer hiking and Zumba dancing. Learn trapeze, cooking and kickboxing. Attend poker games and DJ parties. This time with no counsellors to chaperone you, no curfew to be late for.

Jetsetter
Club Getaway runs “camps” from late May through September. You can book with them directly. But the best time to go (at least in 2011) is July 8th through 10th. That’s when there’s a special camp for members of the travel deal website Jetsetter.
Two special advantages to attending Club Getaway through Jetsetter:
1) Members of Jetsetter tend to be an adventurous and fun-seeking sort—much like fans of Spot Cool Stuff.
2) Jetsetter is offering sizeable discounts on their Club Getaway experience: $300 per person, all-inclusive. Or $275 if you join through Spot Cool Stuff. Joining is free and entitles you to the many other Jetsetter travel discounts too.
As for our male readers looking for a travel experience that allows them to regress a little further back than summer camp, we suggest this kindergarten that’s for grown men only.
