Wine Avec Design

At most of the world’s wine bars there’s a direct correlation between the quality of the decor, the quality of the wine and the snootiness of the clientele. At Chicago’s Avec Restaurant & Wine Bar high design and highly delicious wine have been refreshingly paired with a friendly, informal, atmosphere.

Let’s start with Avec’s design: It has been likened to the inside of a spa. And, indeed, the decor at Avec does have a sort of Scandinavian minimalist quality to it. It is also sleek and so full of cool details (check out the wall made from wine bottles!) that the bar was nominated for a James Beard Fellowship Design Award.

As for the wine, there are over 120 vintages on offer. Most are from the top wine-producing areas of Europe, some are available almost nowhere else in North America except at Avec. We love how more than a quarter of these wines are available in 250 ml carafes, which allows a group of friends to sample several varietals and still be able to walk home at the end of the night.

Finally, that friendly atmosphere. It flows as Avec as freely as the drink. The catalyst for this love? A super-friendly staff, soft wood surroundings and long communal tables. Avec is not a place to go for a private conversation or for a romantic secluded date. But for a social, wine-filled time in high design surroundings no place in Chicago is better.
