Museum Art That’s So Bad It’s Good

Museum Art That’s So Bad It’s Good

Spot Cool Stuff is, shall we say, “challenged” when it comes to the visual arts. Drawing, painting, sculpting—we’re terrible at them all. No self-respecting museum would ever consider putting one of our artworks on display. No museum except for one: MoBA.

MoBA is the acronymic name of the Museum of Bad Art. The museum was inspired by the work Lucy in the Field with Flowers, a painting that was literally—and fittingly, we think—scavenged from a trash bin 1992. Since that inaugural piece MoBA has proudly gone from bad to worse.

Today, the Museum of Bad Art has its home in the Dedham Community Theatre outside of Boston. MoBA has over 250 pieces in its permanent collection though only around 25 to 30 are displayed at any one time. The museum’s curators take seriously their task of preserving the world’s most horrendous artworks and the inspirations behind them.

Take, for example, the painting in the above photo, Mama and Babe. Here’s some of the artist’s description:

The flesh tones bring to mind the top shelf liqueurs of a border bistro. With an astonishing emphasis on facial bone structure, the artist flirts with caricature and captures features of Mamma’s face which remind us of a Presidential candidate. The upright marionettish pose of the babe hints that the early bond between mother and child is as formal as it is familiar.

We aren’t sure which extraterrestrial nation had the presidential candidate that the mother’s face resembles. But we do think the artist has spent too much time drinking from the top shelf of those border bistros.

We also are certain that opportunity to gaze first hand at the quality of the art on display MoBA is worth every penny of the admission fee. MoBA is open Sunday through Thursday 2-9pm, Friday, Saturday and holidays from 1-10pm. Admission is free.
