Controversy Tram Inn:
The Recycled Hotel

Spot Cool Stuff has seen our share of art made from found objects. One of our favorite Caribbean beach bars, Antigua’s Dune Preserve, was constructed largely with beach-scavenged goods. But the Controversy Tram Inn, located in the village of Hoogwoud, Holland, is the only hotel we know of with such a strong focus on recycled objects.

The tire that’s been turned into a sink basin, the car that’s now a jacuzzi, the life boat that’s been fashioned into a bed, the no parking sign that today serves as a table—these are some of the smaller examples of the Controversy Tram’s repurposed items. The inn’s largest recycled objects are its two trams and one full-sized railway car.

The two trams—one once plied the rails in Amsterdam, the other in Germany—today house four luxury bed & breakfast rooms. Every room, or “compartment,” is en-suite and includes a refrigerator, a well-supplied kitchenette and a rich decor of traffic lights, abandon furniture, old car parts and other found objects. It costs €60 per person for the first night (€50 for the second night and €60 for nights thereafter), a rate that includes your choice of Italian, English or French breakfast. Among parents who are traveling with their children, but who also seek time apart from their children, a popular option is to rent out an entire tram, sticking the kids in one of the tram’s compartments while escaping to the relative bliss of the other.

The train car, for its part, has been converted to one large Mexican-themed suite. Its highlight is the hot tub shaped like a giant rainbow sombrero. Including breakfast, a night in this train hotel room will set you back €250 for two people or €300 for four.

If you are in the greater Hoogwoud but are unable to spend the night Controversy Tram Inn it is still worth stopping by. The Inn is located on a farm with all sorts of animals running around. There’s an unusual farm house, one wall of which is comprised of an old London double-decker bus, and all sorts of other oddities. A tour of the grounds includes coffee and pie. Check out the video (below) to get more of a sense of the place.

And in case you are wondering, the Controversy Tram Inn was named after the album by Price, of whom the inn owners are huge fans. There’s nothing at all controversial about this quirky bed and breakfast being fantastic!
