A Visit With Indiana Jones <br>and the Adventure of Archaeology

Fans of Indiana Jones and lovers of ancient history, grab your whip, put on your Fedora hat and head to the Montreal Science Centre this fall. That’s where you’ll find Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology, a cool museum exhibit that merges film fiction with actual archaeology.

You’ll see the rolling boulder that nearly flattened Indy at the start of the first flick. (The boulder was made of styrofoam but still weighs a hefty 200kg, or 440 pounds!) Other props on display behind Plexiglas include Indy’s original hat and whip, the Ark of the Covenant and the motorcycle Harrison Ford and Sean Connery used to escape from the Nazis. Add to that all the exhibit’s movie concept art, costumes and film clips and you have the largest collection of Indiana Jones paraphernalia under one roof since the filming of the movies themselves.

The historical portion of the exhibit, which curators call the “Archeological Zone,” features ancient artifacts that inspired portions of the movie along with video and images on loan from National Geographic. Some of the artifacts, like the papyrus from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, would be big museum draws even without their Indiana Jones connection. Others, like the headpiece from the Staff of Ra, also made an appearance in the movies.

To navigate the Adventure of Archaeology exhibit visitors are given a “video companion” that resembles an oversized, leather-covered iPod Touch. Through the video companion you can also take part in a sort of treasure hunt. It’s great fun. But watch out for the snakes. We hate snakes.
