Yurt “Camping” on the California Coast

Yurt “Camping” on the California Coast

You like camping but your partner prefers more glamorous travel. The solution? Glamping. Glamorous camping. Like that on offer at the The Treebones Resort.

Treebones, located on California’s scenic Big Sur coast, is a resort that offers the perfect romantic getaway for you both. Accommodations here are in yurts, large circular tents originally the domain of Central Asian nomads and made of sheepskin.

A stay at the Treebones, though, would make even the most prosperous Central Asian nomad envious. The yurts here include large comfortable beds of the sort you’d expect to find at a three-star hotel, sinks with running water and private porches with stunning views of the Pacific. And, oh yeah, these yurts do not smell of sheepskin. They also don’t have en-suite restrooms—you have to go up to the main building when nature calls—adding to the “camping” aspect of your stay.

The resort has a common lounge area, complete with a real fireplace and comfy sofas, where guests can relax. There’s also a small pool and hot tub. But the best best aspect of the Treebones is its million dollar location on a secluded stretch of crashing waves coastline. The setting is so dramatic, so pure, so postcard-perfect that even ardent atheists who gaze upon it start to consider the existence of God. The only Big Sur resort with a better location is the significantly more expensive (and very cool) Post Ranch Inn.

Our only complaints with the Treebones Yurt Resort are: 1) the interior quality of the included buffet breakfast, which consists mostly make-your-own waffles and cheap muffins; and 2) the “Treebones” name—there might be no place more gorgeous with a less inviting moniker.

Prices vary greatly with the season and day of the week. Book early and ask for the especially scenic, secluded, and highly recommended yurt #16.

When: Treebones is open year round, with the low season being November through March.

If you go: Don’t forget your toothbrush—the nearest store is a long drive away.

Family friendly? Treebones doesn’t permit children under the age of six. For older children, Treebones has four yurts that can accommodate families.

Camping: Treebones also runs a campground adjacent to the yurts. You’ll need your own gear, but staying at the campground there gives you use of all the Treebones facilities.
