LA’s first power plant is one of its latest hot spots. When The Edison Bar moved into a 1910 building near Harlem Place Alley in downtown L.A. it left much of the infrastructure there intact, including the original boiler, power turbines and much of the piping. Around that industrial facade went mood lighting, low-slung bar, atmospheric dance floor and lots of plush nook for eating, socializing and romancing. The result is beyond cool. Come prepared to stand in line and dress to impress — bouncers won’t let you in wearing hats, sneakers or athletic wear.

LEARN MORE

Downtown’s lounge-life evolution continues, this time in a historically refurbished, turn-of-the-century boiler room.

In Short
Located near Harlem Place Alley–core of L.A.’s early 20th century music scene–this converted cocktail spot with a “Sherlock Holmes-post-industrial vibe” caters to the area’s upscale-loft residents. According to project partners Marc Smith (Golden Gopher) and Andrew Meieran (Mercury Liquors), renovation efforts keep the 1910 Higgins Building’s original structure intact, and that includes preserving many of the original boiler room features such as the enormous central power generator.

Look GoodThe bar is actually located down Harlem Place Alley. Look for the bouncer outside.

Know Before You GoA strict dress code prohibits athletic wear and sneakers (regardless of the brand or cost). Collared shirts are preferred for men; women should dress accordingly.

Happy HourSave 40 percent on classic drinks during the “cocktail hour,” which takes place Wednesday through Friday from 5pmt o 8pm, and Saturdays from 6pm to 8pm.
