One way to save money on hotels and a rental car while traveling western Europe is to get your accommodations and transportation together. You could rent your typical mobile home. But the cheaper and cooler option—to say nothing of the more stylishly retro—choice is the Tonke Camper.
There are four types of Tonke Campers for rent (or for purchase). All include an on board toilet, shower, kitchen and sleeping for two adults. The Explorer 1 is the smallest of the group and the only one with a double bed that has to be folded out. The Explorer 2 has a permanent bed and an underneath “garage” area capable of storing bicycles. The Fieldsleeper 1 has more interior space and more storage areas than either Explorer model and room for a child to sleep. Comparatively, the Fieldsleeper 2 has even larger storage areas (and thus less living space).
Prices to rent a Tonke Camper skyrocket in the summer time, when a three week rental period is required. Off season, though, prices for the Tonke Explorer 1 start at £495. Most Tonke rentals are out of Holland but occasionally pick-up in other places in Europe can be arranged.
